New initiative to cut bike theft in York
Saturday 30 January
I joined more than 1500 other cyclists in York today who have already signed up to the new police registration system for bikes. Operation Spoke was launched last month to reduce bike theft and return stolen bikes to owners.
I met Police Sergeants Jon Asvadi and Jon Hodgson, who marked my bike with a unique reference number in UV pen. The details will then be uploaded onto the national property register. The police aim to register over 10,000 bikes in York to cut bike related crime.
Overall crime in York fell by 17% between April and November 2009, which a great achievement. But as a cycling city, York is a target for bike thieves. The police have introduced very effective schemes in York in the past to cut bike crime, but we can still do more, so I would urge all cyclists to get in touch with Operation Spoke to get their bike marked.
