Good news for Holgate Windmill

Friday 29 January
I visited Holgate Windmill today as staff prepare to start milling wholemeal flour later this year.
There were fears that new food regulations would halt the restoration project, after the Government announced that folic acid should be added to flour to protect pregnant women. After writing to the Food Standards Agency, I received assurance from the Government that the new regulations would not apply to wholemeal flour produced by smaller traditional windmills.
I have been following the restoration project at Holgate Windmill for a number of years, and it was great to meet with the Windmill’s Preservation Society when they are a step closer to producing their own flour. This will restore a tradition in York dating back hundreds of years.
